I'm currently revising (read: learning from scratch) for my last exam, which is Systems Engineering/Engineering Economics. I was revising about Sustainable Development (a topic I'm supposed to know off the back of my hand being all EWB etc) and I read something that made me quite sad when I first heard it in the lecture.
If the world had 100 people which represented the population now:
- about 60% of the world's wealth would be owned by 6 people
- all of these 6 people would be citizens of the US
- 80 would live in sub-standard housing (e.g. no heating, electricity, water)
- 70 would be unable to read
- 50 would suffer from malnutrition
- only one would have a College education
A lot of you are that 1%. What lucky boys and girls you all are.
